The search for gold and silver, the mining industry, the Homestead Act, the Transcontinental Railroad, and new beginnings were some of the major reasons for migrating towards the west. African Americans, farmers, and immigrants (most noteworthy the Chinese) were many of the diverse people looking for better opportunities in the west. However, conditions in the west were far from satisfactory due to the “ravages of locusts swarms,” and, “tornadoes, hailstorms and extreme temperatures” which rendered life almost unbearable to westerners (Schultz 323).
