In Derry, Maine, the frequent murder of children occurs around every thirty years. Unidentified serial killers are always being placed at fault for the tragic incidents, and the killings are always forgotten about soon after the killings stop. Being tired of getting picked on by a local bully, Henry Bowers, a group of seven children, later known as “the losers,” gang up to end the bullying. “The losers” later find out they are all being harassed by something in different forms that they cannot understand, later known as IT. IT is a transfiguring character who reacts to the mental fears of others. Due to the more trusting nature of children, IT often preys upon their innocent minds and exploit their fears. Being a fear of Bill's, IT uses this to IT's advantage. Bill's first encounter of IT is when he sees IT in the form of Georgie's school photograph. Following this encounter, Bill is reminded of his death, mostly always including that it is his fault he was murdered. When traveling with "The Loser" gang, IT comes on the radio station as Georgie and says "You sent me out and it killed me" (King 959). Beverly Marsh, the only female of the group, experiences IT for the first time when she hears voices in her bathroom sink, and soon after, blood began to bubble up from the drain. IT acts through blood to frighten Beverly because she is frequently beaten by her father. Michael Hanlon sees IT through the form of a bird because his father had also experienced the bird in an earlier time. IT came to Ben Hanscom first through his father, who had passed away, and then turns to a mummy. Just as IT works through mental fears, IT work on troubles with people that “The Losers” are facing. As analyses Alyx Dellamonica stated, "[IT] uses adults and the gown-up world against them." This is so the children are never believed when their options are to turn to the police, or another grown-up figure, which makes IT's job of killing children easier. IT started to work through the infamous bully, Henry Bowers, as he turned him even crazier than he is, and made him have a sudden urge to eliminate the gang. Henry returns in “The Loser’s” adulthood and again tries to obtain the same
