Have you ever scrutinized and explored multiple pieces of literature and compared them to how their film counterpart portrays their plot? To analyze and discuss literature you must compare and contrast the pieces in order to elaborate and connect back to the text to supply your reader with an understanding of the piece. The ways that the films differentiate from the pieces of literature is their literary components. We will compare and contrast the characters, setting, and plot of three pieces of literature and their film adaptations. The three pieces of literature are “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, “Rappaccini’s daughter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter. In the piece “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall”, the setting is at a plantation in the middle of nowhere, the location is the same in the film adaptation where it is set about 100 years in the past. This shows how the pieces of literature can compare to the film and not contrast like it does in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter”. In the piece of literature “Rappaccini's Daughter”, The garden is not described unlike in the film adaptation, where they keep talking about how beautiful the garden is.
