In the words uttered by Katniss Everdeen “I was their Mockingjay long before I accepted the role” from the movie: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1, somehow makes me believe that leadership is an act of embracing the responsibility of the people and circumstances around you. I asked my colleagues, what’s the first word that comes out of their mind every time they hear the word “leadership”? Their answers all boils down in saying that, leadership is tantamount to influence. According to them, as long as an individual influences others may it be for positive or negative goal, leadership is present. According to the book, the leadership style must be comparative to the followers’ developmental level. The key feature of this theory that made me bet on this theory is the proper appropriation of leadership styles in accordance to the competence and commitment of the followers. I would say that it is very logical to test how hot the water is before submerging yourself into it. In the context of leadership, testing your followers’ competence and commitment will lead you in better understanding of which leadership styles to do. I remember when I handle an organization back then. According to the book, it is a leadership by which leader’s align follower’s to have the same goals with his. The reason why I find it interesting is because it is very idealistic. I don’t mean any negative impressions with this kind of leadership but I think that this leadership style would be effective in an organization which suffered from a poor management for a long time, yet still very hopeful to have a positive change in governance. In my country, the Philippines, most people have negative impressions when they hear about government. Because for such a long time, leaders who seat in the government are reported committing graft and corruption. Filipinos remained hopeful until the current President was elected in the name of Benigno Aquino III. He was the son of the former President Corazon Aquino who fought for the democracy of the country. I would say the current president of the Philippines is the best example for a transformational leadership. He was able to make the people believe that if there’s no corruption, there’ll be no poverty.
