In the past I have been curious about my disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and so I researched it. I was able to find out the background and effects of the disease, and I was able to answer all of my questions. This means not only can we look up symptoms, but we can explore treatments and medicines on the web. While it is never a good idea to skip out on the doctor completely, the Internet has empowered patients to make educated decisions about what to do next. As we move further into the 21st century, we continue to advance technologies that cure illnesses and improve our quality of life. For one, technology has greatly expanded access to education. In medieval times, books were rare and only upper classes had access to educational opportunities. Individuals had to travel to centers of learning to get an education. Today, massive amounts of information (books, audio, images, videos) are available at one’s fingertips through the internet, and opportunities for formal learning are available online worldwide through the Khan Academy, MOOCs, podcasts, traditional online degree programs, and more.
