The Hunger Games Trilogy Written by Suzanne Collins gained popularity but it was not until the last novel that it reached the heights of success. In 2012, the first novel was converted into a film. It was praised for the brave, strong and young independent protagonist. According to Eagleton, social criticism is the most important form of criticism. The Trilogy of The hunger Games starts by first introducing the country of Panem in North America where the story unfolds. The country is managed and controlled by powerful leaders of a wealthy area referred to as the ‘Capitol’, which is dependent on 12 poorer districts to fulfill the day-to-day needs of its inhabitants to maintain their dominance and luxurious lifestyle. She herself has specified in interviews that her novel criticizes the present day scenario of the US (2010 “Sit Down with Suzanne Collins”). Suzanne Collins portrayed the capitol as a violent and unjust part of the country which forced the tributes to do what they feared. Katniss, a skilled hunter is horrified by the possibility of dying in the arena but her worst fear revolves around killing others in order to survive. “You know how to kill,” says her friend Gale in the book. “Not people,” she replies, filled with horror at the idea. Katniss Moans over the death of all those she killed and fills up her heart with guilt and sorrow. Collins points us towards the destructive thinking of humans, the unjust social hierarchy and the dangers associated with the misuse of powers. She manages to handle her story in a direct yet innovative way. Forced to appear on camera constantly, physically changed and shaped for entertainment, emotionally and mentally adapt to the lifestyle of the capitol, the tributes remain all their lives tied. They are forced to entertain the viewers by killing their fellow countrymen and thrown into the arena to live with the pain. Their families are left to suffer after their death, their lives are torn apart and they get buried under social unjust and obligations. The rule of the rich and wealthier costs the life of innocent people while the Capitol celebrates and supports their favorites. Katniss, unknowingly, started a rivalry in the second book, ‘the catching fire’ by shooting her arrow in the sky. Since then, she is portrayed as a leader who could possibly free the districts from the capitols rule and once again, the citizens of the country could be free.
