More than 400,000 years ago the Hohokam civilization thrived in the Arizona desert. Seemingly undaunted by little rainfall and high temperatures, the Hohokam were master farmers. They understood in order to survive they would need to work the land to their benefit. Using primitive tools, they built canals to divert water from distant rivers to irrigate crops, some of which are still evidenced today near Scottsdale. They were able to sustain their community for more than a 1,000 years - then vanished.
