The Hero, Odysseus Odysseus, son of Laertes, is a very intelligent, courageous, and strong man who is portrayed as a hero in The Odyssey by Homer. He uses all of these traits while he goes through the rough ten-year journey of coming home. He comes upon a Cyclopes who shows barely any hospitality, the beautiful sound of the Sirens, and the troubling suitors who are trying to marry his beloved wife. He is very faithful throughout the whole journey and is confident that he will make it home. Odysseus is for sure a passionate hero who will go to any extreme to do what is right. He uses all of his traits to escape all of these challenges and make it home. Once he makes it home to Ithaca, he disguises himself as a beggar. He realizes that he cannot show himself to the public as Odysseus because of the suitors that have taken over the city. Odysseus’ wife, Penelope, has set up a contest to determine which of the suitors will be her husband. Whoever can string Odysseus’ old bow and shoot it through the axe-handles like Odysseus used to do. Needless to say, none of the suitors could do it. Odysseus, disguised as the beggar, knew that he could easily string and shoot the bow. So he asks for a try and is given one, even though the suitors think it is ridiculous. Easily, Odysseus strings the bow and shoots the arrow. This action surprises all of the suitors and they quickly realize Odysseus’ real identity. After he successfully shoots the arrow, Odysseus states, “You yellow dogs, you thought I’d never make it home from the land of Troy. You took my house to plunder, twisted my maids to serve your beds. You dared bid of my wife while I was alive. Contempt was all you had for the gods who rule wide heaven, contempt for what men say of you hereafter.
