Compare and Contrast Essay On “The Necklace” and “The Gift of the Magi” The two stories, “The Necklace” and “The Gift Of The Magi” are very similar and also very different as well. They are more similar than different i think personally. No story can ever be the same though! Am I right? Yes, i am right. If you care about this and agree with me that they are both similar and different, keep reading to learn about these differences and similarities and how they connect to each of the stories as a whole. The stories are similar in a couple of ways. The Gift of the Magi and The Necklace both have a husband and a wife that care about eachother. Some more than others, but through it all, they both care about eachother. The husbands seem to care a lot about their wives in this story. As we already know, these stories both involve a husband and wife. although these both include that, one of the wives cares more efficiently about her husband than the other. As we all know, Madame Loisel cares more about herself than she does her husband. An example of this is, “ Instead of being delighted as her husband had hoped, she tossed the invitation on the table and muttered, annoyed:” what do you expect me to do with that?” ( Tomas Rivera Page 609-610). This is showing how she is greedy and the fact that her husband gave her something to try to be sweet and she still got angry, shows that she cares more about herself than she does about her husband. In the Gift of the Magi, Della cares more about her husband than she does herself, and is not greedy. and example of this is, “She had been saving every penny she could for a month.” (O.Henry Page 525). She was saving every penny that she possibly could for Jim, which shows how much she cares about him and is not greedy towards herself as madame Loisel
