In the first chapter of Dracula, the book is narrated by Jonathan Harker who is traveling to Transylvania in search of Count Dracula. There are many different ominous overtones when reading about Transylvania, Count Dracula, and even Dracula’s castle. The setting of Transylvania is gloomy and in addition to this, the people in Transylvania and Count Dracula himself is arousing much interest and suspicion with Jonathan Harker. When Jonathan Harker first arrives in Transylvania, he stays at the Golden Krone Hotel and an older woman goes up to his room before he leaves to go to Dracula’s castle. She asked if he really must go and stay with Dracula in his castle. This is mysterious because it makes the reader wonder about Dracula and his castle and if it is really as scary as the people in Transylvania are making it seem. When the sun comes out, Transylvania does not seem so mysterious. The carriage ride out to the castle was very long, so long in fact that night began to fall. Furthermore, the setting began to get cold as night fell and before the sun finally went down, the shadows were surrounding Harker on the carriage. While on the carriage ride, other passengers became excited, but Harker did not know why. The air seemed to become heavy and clouds started to roll in. When the carriage came to a stop, the driver was talking to Harker and while that was happening, the horses were neighing and seemed to be scared of something.
