In the script “Odysseus and the Sirens”, I believe Odysseus, a Greek soldier, is a true hero. I determined this because, through his actions, words, and thoughts from other present characters, he portrays many heroic characteristics, consisting of selflessness, dedication, and bravery.
The first heroic trait in correlation with Odysseus would be selflessness. Throughout the progression of the script, Odysseus is read speaking and doing many things that resemble selfless behaviour. For example, when Athena brought up the topic of the Sirens being alive and well, she made a quick note about how any traveller who dare listens to their song, will surely meet an untimely demise. When Odysseus asked what song possesses such great power that it would kill any poor soul who listens, she responded by saying no mortal should know. This obviously peaked Odysseus’ interest, which led him to believe that the Sirens wield the power to free the mortals from the God’s wrath. He says, “I…show more content… Over the course of ten years, Odysseus stood beside his crew, and fought long and hard in the Troy war, and it would seem as though it all paid off, as he; and most of his crew, made it out alive. It’s clear that war can take a horrible toll on you, emotionally and/or physically. Odysseus admits that “in Troy, I fought for ten long years. There I learned what war really is…” This may be a sign that he ran into some traumatizing, or perhaps near death experiences; but held on. His drive to defeat the opposing soldiers must have been something that helped him through the painful journey, and his dedication to his crew and family surely kept this alive. And his hard work does not go unrecognized, for when they neared the Siren’s settling place, they sang, “Hail! Our hero comes this way, the conqueror of Troy! …” Which definitely reveals that his dedication to overthrow Troy pulled him through, and labelled him as a
