Raping With Words Implicitly Kurt Cobain wrote an anti-rape song titled "Rape Me" through the eyes of the victim. Kurt stated in an interview in 1993 "By writing songs as blunt as 'Rape Me.' Having to resort to doing something like that is almost embarrassing because people didn't understand when we wrote about a song like 'About a Girl' or 'Polly,' and having to explain that and having misunderstandings about it, I decided to write 'Rape Me' in a way that was so blunt and obvious that no one could deny it; no one could read into it any other way, although some people have." (Cobain). Kurt made this song as blunt as possible, because he was tired of people putting too much meaning into his lyrics. However, people still read between the lines and misunderstood and the controversy then took place. The controversial song "Rape Me" by Nirvana was an explicit song lyrically and was written to have blunt and bold message. In today’s society the word rape has a very negative connation, somewhat of a taboo. The word rape is sung 27 times in the song, clearly making it explicit. Kurt Cobain wrote this song about the events that have happened in the 1990’s. The number of forcible rape cases that took place in the United States in the 1990’s was an average of 102,560 and has fluctuate (not by much) till this present day. In 2015 rape has become such a huge topic in society today that a term Rape Culture has arose. Rape culture is a theoretical concept in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality. There has most defiantly been a social and cultural change around rape.
