The Black Panther Party for Self Defence was started in the year 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California. This party was started to help defend African American Communities in a time in America where African American people were not offered many human rights. The party had had a powerful impact on the community in America and is considered a Freedom Fighter group. It was known, to use terrorist tactics at times to help convey this message. The party still helped the average African American man and is a Freedom Fighter Group. The party started because it believed that Dr. Martin Luther King was not getting his message of ‘Black Equality’ across. One of the ways that they did this was by trying to stop the police brutality. This was at a time that police brutality was extremely high towards Black people. The main way that they had done this was by following the police around while holding their firearms. Technically this was legal, as in California, the gun law stated that any person was allowed to walk around with a firearm, only as long as it is not concealed. The Panthers patrolled the police and whenever they came in contact with an African American person, the Panthers would stroll towards the police, stand a reasonable distance away from the scene so that the police could not say that they were obstructing them. The Party then held their weapons out while the police attempted to deal with the black person that they stopped. This resulted in policemen to be wary of how they conducted themselves. The party was extremely diligent, be it in public or when they would conduct their meetings. They had a decent set of rules that left no room for double standards or laziness. The party had stated that if any member of the party were to be found shooting drugs into their system, they would be removed from the party; this rule is a good rule to have in place as the party attempted to assist people in Communities that had Drug Issues. Another rule is that Party members are not allowed to handle a weapon when under the influence. That rule keeps any unnecessary casualties from occurring and this shows the parties concern for people.
