The 95 Theses was introduced in 1517 by Martin Luther. Martin Luther was the author of the 95 Theses. Martin Luther was a German monk who wanted to fix everything he thought the Catholic Church was doing wrong. The 95 Theses were written because Martin Luther was not happy with what the Catholic Church was teaching. Martin Luther was the first to stand up to the Catholic Church and show them what they were doing wrong. The Catholic Church, however, did not like the 95 Theses. There is an old legend that says that Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. In the 95 Theses, Martin Luther criticized how the Pope had too much power, how the Catholic Church is too wealthy, and the most important one Martin Luther wrote about was indulgences. Indulgences were the Catholic conception of salvation. The Catholic conception of salvation is the payment of your sins. There are three ways you can pay for your sins, money, relic, and working off someone else’s sins. If you paid money then you would put the money in the indulgence boxes, also known as coffers, and the money would pay for someone’s sins. There was a quote written by Letzel and it goes, “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, a soul in purgatory springs.” This means that if you pay enough money that the soul of the person that is in hell you paid money for will go to heaven if you paid enough for them to. If you paid off your sins by relic then you gave money to the Pope who gave you a bone, hair, tooth, etc. from a famous person in the Bible, or so you would be told. You would rub this item the Pope has given you and supposedly have good luck after. The last way is to work someone else’s sins
