In the short story “Thank you M’am” by Langston Hughes the author portrays the character Roger as weak. Roger reveals his debility in a couple ways throughout the story. For one thing, he was not strong enough to snatch Mrs. Jones’ purse. Roger overestimates his strength when attempting to steal Mrs. Jones’ purse, “But, the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast like he hoped, the boy fell on his back and his legs flew up”, showing his lack of strength (Hughes 122). Instead of making a clean getaway like he had planned, Roger falls down. As a result, he ends up getting caught by Mrs. Jones. Furthermore, the way he is described makes him seem frail.
