The case of Ted Kaczynski is one that is quite unique from a law enforcement perspective, especially considering the length of time he went undetected. Although he may have been free for years after his first attack, it was not for a lack of effort or police work. Many agencies over many years did thousands of searches in attempt to locate the man dubbed “The Unabomber.” Many of the things law enforcement did in the search was right, even if Kaczynski was able to evade capture. The main thing they did is, despite the length of time, they did manage to catch the perpetrator. Between state, local, and federal agencies, years and a vast sum of money was used trying to locate Kaczynski. No agency has an unlimited budget, so all of this time and money cost tax payers a great deal of money over the long term. Though he was caught, it wasn’t very efficient and came at great cost. Another thing that could have been handled better was the communication between agencies. Though the FBI was the one officially running the investigation, a lot of the information and searches came from local and state agencies. A few times one agency would receive information or a tip and it would not be relayed outside of their own agency. If the investigation had utilized the idea of fusion centers, like we do today, we would have achieved a much more efficient dissemination of information. Without fusion centers, “the lack of a robust multichannel system for information and intelligence sharing points to a system that is still ‘blinking red’”(Pfeifer 2012). The main thing law enforcement did wrong is not agreeing on who they were looking for. Early on in the investigation, a psychological profiler correctly identified many of the Ted Kaczynski’s personality traits. However, because no one could agree on who they were looking for, the profile was changed to reflect a person vastly different than Kaczynski. There is no way to accurately judge the amount of time it may have saved getting the information correct. In any investigation, there are always things that we done well and things that weren’t.
