INTRODUCTION: In environmental politics there are a wide variety of career opportunities to choose from. This memorandum will identify the different career paths that one could take in order to obtain a position as a Chief Sustainability officer (CSO) in the public and private sectors. The goal for this memorandum is to help identify the responsibilities of an environmental steward based on the current environmental movement. Results: The beginning of my research was mainly focused on the sustainability leadership positions within government agencies. However, throughout my research I recognized that the sustainability field has recently gained attention in the last 30 years. Therefore, by narrowing down my search to Chief Sustainability Officer, I was able to start finding information on environmental career paths within the public and private sector. 1. Many Chief Sustainability Officers continue their higher education and obtain either a Master’s degree or attend Law school. Therefore, what are the pros and cons of obtaining a master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Management vs a Law degree with an environmental specialization?
