Why would Christians in the West be moved to embark on a dangerous journey to fight in the holy land after hearing Pope Urbans speech at Clermont? In 1095 Pope Urban delivered a speech at Clermont asking the warriors of Europe to release the Holy Land from the Muslims. Pope Urban’s speech was very persuasive and influential. He asked his people to take the higher road and be selfless because ultimately that is what brings resolution. The Pope was sent by the Byzantine Emperor to get help from the west against the Turks, who had taken almost all of the Asian Minor from him (Www1.cbn.com). Pope Urban tells the Christians in his speech that a race from the kingdom of Persians have either destroyed the churches of God or seized them for the means of their own religion (Legacy.fordham.edu). This made the Christians feel threatened and they then, felt it was their duty to defend their religion. Pope Urban promised absolution and remission of sins for all who died in the service of Christ. However, not all European nobles chose to rescue the Holy City of Jerusalem for the sake of their religion, some were tempted by the prospect of increased land holdings and riches that they could gain from the conquest (Crusade, 2015). In conclusion of the many that were looking to gain riches and land holdings, these nobles were responsible for the death of several innocent people (Crusade, 2015). The Christians lacked experience and skill when it came to their fight against the Muslims, whose armies were well trained, experienced, and disciplined.
