Genre: The book is called Maniac Magee and is published by Jerry Spinelli. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. This novel is about an orphaned boy who has a difficult life but also experiences adventures with his friend and becomes happy at the end. What takes place in this book can happen to anybody and that is why the genre is realistic fiction. In the story it says, “This is the life of a boy who is named Maniac begins”. Point of View: The point of view of this story is in third person. Protagonists: The main characters are Maniac Magee, Amanda Beale, Grayson, Mars Bar. The relationship between Hester, Lester and Amanda is that they are siblings. Grayson and Amanda are Maniac’s friends. Maniac was living with Amanda for a long time.…show more content…
They meet when Maniac and Amanda stop being friends and Maniac runs away. When he ran away, he ended up in a park and then Grayson sees that he is tired he leaves his job and takes him to his house. After that Grayson takes Maniac to eat a zeep (sandwich) but maniac says that he is still hungry so he asks Grayson to buy him Butterscotch Krimpets. Then when Maniac tells Grayson that he used to live with Amanda but he ran away. Then Grayson lets Maniac live in his house. In the story Grayson tell Maniac “if you don’t have a home, you can come live with me”. Another major event that Maniac does is when he becomes a kid that can do anything in the East End. He does impressive things that regular kids cannot do. For Example, there is a big tall kid named John Mcnab and he throws very fast pitches that no one can hit of them. Then comes Maniac Magee and starts to hit Mcnabs fastballs one by one for each pitch. Also there is a kid named Mars Bar Johnson and everybody is scared of him but then Maniac stands up to him and then he is not so scary and doesn’t bother that many kids. This book is about a white boy in a black community. I think this theme because there were a lot black people that did not like Maniac as an actual person. They thought of him as an outsider that came to take their place. They people in the community never gave him a chance to show how gentle, nice, and harmless Maniac was. Maniac just wanted to make friends, but mostly to belong somewhere as his parents had died when he was very young. Manic desired a place to call home but the people saw him a threat and treated him very bad. In the story people yelled, “Get out of here now. Nobody wants you out here so leave and do not come back. Your kind is waiting”. Connection: This book reminds me of a text-text connection. I read Milkweed early in the school year. Both book have similar themes. The two Main characters are similar in that they both fight for what they want and do not give up in their quest to find a true home or a goal. Both of the main characters were homeless and are taken in by people who care about them. They both lose their parents in a car accident. They also find friends that are loving and caring but struggle greatly to find stability in their
