To begin with, Grendel’s last words were “Poor Grendel’s had an accident… So may you all” (Gardner 174). This was intended for mankind as a curse. For instance, he recalls, “Bull do such things, though they don’t even know that the calves they defend are theirs.” (Gardner 20). In other words, the bull symbolizes mankind.
