To begin with, Grendel’s last words were “Poor Grendel’s had an accident… So may you all” (Gardner 174). This was intended for mankind as a curse. For instance, he recalls, “Bull do such things, though they don’t even know that the calves they defend are theirs.” (Gardner 20). In other words, the bull symbolizes mankind. Mankind sometimes fight for no reason just like the bull defended a calf that might not be his. Humans fight to defend something that never has been theirs or what they want to keep. For example, in wars people fight against other counties to conquer them or to solve a problem that is not theirs.
