In Incoming Tide, a short story from Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge, Kevin visits his old town in plans of killing himself. Kevin runs into his old teacher Mrs. Kitteridge who invited herself into his car so she could catch up with him. Mrs. Kitteridge served as a catalyst to help Kevin survive and not commit suicide. Kevin had gone back to his town to commit suicide, but seen Mrs. Kitteridge who interrupted this. As Kevin keeps talking to Mrs. Kitteridge he begins to have second thoughts after he had already made up his mind. After saving a life Kevin begins to embrace his life. Kevin had returned to his home town to kill himself with a rifle “right now the blanket was wrapped around a rifle” (33). He planned to kill himself at his childhood
