In this weekly short essay it was asked to compare and contrast two couples in the stories read this week. These two couples are Mr. and Mrs. Mallard in “Story of an Hour” as well as Mathilde and Monsieur Loisel in “The Necklace”. This essay will not only compare and contrast these couples, but also get more in depth about their similarities and differences. In “Story of an Hour” Mrs. Mallard was very upset and sobbing due to her husbands’ death, but she was excited to be freed from her burdens as a married woman. “She said it over and over under her breath: “free, free, free!” The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body.” (Chopin, 1894) This quote from the story shows how she was overcoming the fear of becoming her own woman while still grieving her husbands’ death. At the end of this story her husband turns out to be alive, whereas when she sees him in the doorway, she passes away. Monsieur Loisel were introduced in “The Neckalce” as a couple whom seemed to be a little less happy than they should be. Mr. Loisel tried to please his wife by surprising her with an invitation to a ball; however, she was less than pleased when Mr. Loisel gave her the invitation. “Instead of being delighted, as her husband hoped, she threw the invitation on the table with annoyance, murmuring— “What do you want me to do with that?” (Maupassant, 1884) Mr. Loisel must have loved his wife since he went through the trouble of receiving the invitation only for his wife to treat him as if he did not understand it takes more than an invitation to go to a ball. Not only did he prove his love by buying her a new dress, his love also proves true near the end of the story where he helped pay off the debt she caused by losing the borrowed
