A short fiction is an imaginary work of prose that is shorter in length than a novel. Unlike a novel, a short story can range from 1,000 to 20,000 words and typically take an hour to complete the reading. Due to the condensed length, short fiction stories focus on one plot, one main character with a few additional minor characters, and one central theme. Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour and Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man Is Hard to Find are two remarkable short fiction stories. Both works use similar third person narration styles and major and minor character usage; however, their styles respectfully are altered in order for their stories to be told appropriately. The narration of a story is crucial because it revolves around the perspective the story is going to be told in. Chopin does include a few minor characters in order for the story to be told since the point of view is not centered on Mrs. Mallard’s perspective. Along with being the protagonist, Chopin succeeds in making Mrs. Mallard a dynamic character. In the beginning of the short fiction, Mrs. Mallard comes across a weak woman longing for freedom. As the story progresses, she then becomes a woman under her own control. The readers tend to find themselves rooting Mrs. Mallard on and hoping she gets the life she’s always desired. With Mrs. Mallard being dynamic character, Chopin makes Mr. Mallard a static character in the short fiction. Throughout the entire story, Mr. Mallard’s character is dead and does not progress in any way. On the other hand, Kate Chopin’s additional minor characters aid in the advancement of the story. Unlike Kate Chopin’s short story, Flannery O’Connor’s short fiction, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, embodies the main character impacting the whole storyline rather than the
