PLOT SUMMARY AND THEME OF THE NOVEL: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is set in both pre-apocalyptic and post- apocalyptic times, following the lives of multiple characters after the Georgia Flu wipes out most of humankind. The book follows the story of Arthur Leander, his first wife, a photographer who tried to save his life, a woman who acted alongside him as a child, a group known as the Traveling Symphony, and the Prophet, who is the main antagonist. The characters struggle to maintain fulfilling lives while still surviving; however, when they finally find a town powered by electricity, they gain new hope. After his brother committed suicide, Jeevan left. He eventually ended up living in a settlement with his wife and son, where he used his skills as a paramedic to help people. Jeevan is a round character, because he does have a clearly developed personality, but he is static because he does not undergo much change over the course of the novel. Jeevan’s actions make him a likable character to readers. He is always shown trying to do the right thing, such as helping people in need. Another important character in the book is Arthur Leander. Arthur was a famed actor who often struggled to balance his personal life with his fame. He connects almost everyone in the book. Arthur grew up on an island, but moved to Toronto, at first to study, later to begin pursuing acting. He was married and divorced three times, at first with Miranda, then Elizabeth and then Linda. With Elizabeth, he had a son named Tyler whom he was not able to spend much time with. Shortly before the pandemic, at the age of fifty-one, he died while performing King Lear. Arthur is a round and dynamic character. His personality is well-developed, and he is also shown to experience many changes
