In this age of technology, social problem among youngsters is a serious concern to many people in Malaysia. ”The concept of "social problem" is a claim that some condition, set of events, or group of persons constitutes a troublesome situation that needs to be changed or ameliorated” (Joseph R. Gusfield, n. d.). There are several type of social problem that often occur among youngsters, that are drug abuse, alcohol abuse, baby dumping, bullying and others. However, one of the social problem is more widespread in Malaysia that is drug abuse among youngsters. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, drug abuse everlasting the nation’s number one enemy and campaigns to obliterate the troubles were essential. (Roy Goh, 2016). Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centres (n. d.). explained that “the impact of drug abuse and dependence can be far-reaching, affecting almost every organ in the human body”. It means that the health of youngsters would be problematic if them caught up in drug abuse. For instance, weaken the immune system, cause of cardiovascular conditions ranging from abnormal heart rate to heart attacks, liver failure, cause seizures, stroke, brain damage and others. Hence, the rate of disease in Malaysia will increase and this will lead to the country’s development are stunted. Moreover, “Drug abuse harms everybody and does good to none. Government, society, families, the individual drug user and the public - all suffer because it is a social problem. It has been suggested that there may be a link between the marked decline in scholastic achievement of the youth of today and increase in illegal drug use among them”(Kofi Ohene-Konado, n. d.). It can be explained that drug abuse affects not only individual but also the society and country. Thus, it can be attributed to a decrease in the development of rational thought and decision making process caused by drug abuse among youngsters. If youngsters involved in this social problem, their future will be affected by the decline in academic and work performance because they cannot fully concentrate on their studies and works. According to The Partnership at Drugfree Organization (n. d.), “parents are the most effective force in preventing and reducing adolescents risky behaviours and helping our nation’s youth lead healthy drug free lives”. The role of parents is very important in maintaining, educating and caring for their children from a young age. On the young stage, education and attention should be given because at this stage the children have started to learn about many things. The Partnership at Drugfree Organization (n. d.) stated that “research shows that kids who learn about the dangers of drugs at home are up to fifty percent less likely to use drugs than kids who don’t learn about these dangers from their parents”. Thus it shows that youngsters learn about the dangers of drug use from their parents since their childhood. If their parents do not exposed the dangers of drug abuse to them, most likely the youngsters will involve in drug abuse. Furthermore, “Parental monitoring and supervision are critical for drug abuse prevention. These skills can be enhanced with training on rule-setting; techniques for monitoring activities; praise for appropriate behaviour; and moderate, consistent discipline that enforces defined family rules”.(National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2003).
