The Scarlet Letter carries many themes and one major theme is “sin”. As the three main characters carry on many sins throughout the this novel which are Dimmesdale, Chillingsworth, and Hester Prynne. These three major characters carry a big role in the society, Dimmesdale being the minister and Chillingsworth being the doctor and Hester being a housewife. In the novel Hester wears her sin on her chest the letter “A” reminding her of her sin every single day of her life. There is Dimmesdale who hides his sin in the shadow which leads to him having more consequences by him growing weaker and him isolating himself from the community. Her sin only seems to exist in the minds of others because without fore knowledge of her guilt, she would be an otherwise beautiful woman holding an infant. Hester might not think of her sin the same way her society does and she does not physically bear the marks of her guilt aside from the gilded letter.“Weeks, it was true, might sometimes elapse, during which Pearl’s gaze might never once be fixed upon the scarlet letter; but then again, it would come as unawares, like the stroke of sudden death, and always with that peculiar smile and odd expression of the eyes” (1055). Hester may not show signs of the burden of her sin, this constant reminder by her daughter reminds her of her sin everyday.
