The short story “Mericans” by Sandra Cisneros is about a little girl who is more Americanized than her grandmother who is from Mexico. This is supported by the passage, “The awful grandmother says it all in Spanish, which I understand when I’m paying attention”. The little girl’s existence is like a bridge between two cultures. She has a hard time understanding the old ways of her grandmother because she does not identify with the grandmother’s values. The girl is suffering because she is not allowed to join in the festivities occurring across the street or even run through the cemetery, something most American children are allowed to do or at least have done.
