In Sherryl Kleinman’s article “Why Sexist Language Matters”, I agree with the author’s contention. Sherryl uses a lot of great examples in her article in how women are being put down with the term “Man/Men”. Many people/society don’t realize this because of how it became so normal around us all; that it is in the norm. “…male-based generics are another indicator—and, more importantly, a reinforcer—of a system in which “man” in the abstract and men in the flesh are privileged over women.” Why is it that women are being treated that way? It is a norm to us all now that we use “chairman”, “postman”, “man-made”, “manpower”, “manning”, “freshman”, and many more to define both genders.
