Shadowing and interning in healthcare settings in rural, lower-SES India involved being in close quarters with subpar mental healthcare. While shadowing at the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped in New Delhi, India, a government-run psychiatric facility, I was faced with an extremely unsettling and overwhelming situation. On a hot June afternoon, a family brought in their deaf 5-year-old daughter in for a diagnosis, since she was struggling with communication. For the appointment, the parents had paid Rs. 50 (less than $1), which was a sizeable amount of money given that the family breadwinner’s was a street sweeper.
