When a helper “shares their own personal views or experiences with a client for the purpose of improving the client’s mental or emotional state” the helper has engaged in self-disclosure. (LoFrisco, 2012) Self-disclosure in a helper-client relationship can be used to build trust when used appropriately. It can also be used to “increase client self-disclosure…and establish a more equal relationship.” (Corey & Corey, 2014) In order to effectively use self-disclosure, one should proceed with caution, always critically evaluating what information is acceptable to disclose and which information is not.
