My Science Fair project for the 2015-2016 school year is about comparing which soil has a higher average growth rate over the course of several weeks. I will be comparing organic and commercial or potting soil. In these next pages, you will read the detailed research I have done before starting this project. Past Research done by others Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) did not test different soils, rather he tested and studied heredity, but Mendel used pea plants, the same ones that I will use in my experiment. Mendel used pea plants because they have easily observable traits, they self-pollinate, they grow faster than many other plants, you can grow many more generations, and lastly, you can cross breed them, having more control over the pea plants. These are all reasons why I am using them, also. I thought Gregor Mendel would be helpful to relate my project to.…show more content…
Organic soil always seemed to work the best, but potting soil worked too, but simply not as well. General Info (magazines, newspapers, interviews, internet, books, other sources) For your plants to grow the best, first you need to know exactly what makes up your soil. All natural soil is composed of four main materials – sand, clay, silt, and organic matter (also known as humus). The type of soil you have can be told from these four materials. Knowing even just a little bit about the soil you are using can give you an idea of how well it will grow plants. The area that the root of your plant grows in is wider and deeper than most realize, so you need a soil that will be beneficial to the roots. Also, if your soil is poor at draining too much water, it can kill the plant. That is why having a dependable soil is more important than you realize. As I mentioned earlier, soil needs certain properties to grow plants
