Violence in South African schools is an issue that has become more prominent in the last few years. At present there is an epidemic of school violence that has overtaken the nation. All over the country, many students fear entering school buildings because they know it is a place where they may be teased, bullied, and physically or mentally abused. In nearly every school’s mission statement, it is stated the school will provide a safe environment for all children; yet, every day on the news, there are stories in which a teenager commits suicide over bullying or a teenager has inflicted pain on another student. However in order to maintain a peaceful environment for all, school management, teachers and parents as well as the neighboring communities must get involved and take a stand against school violence. Pinpointing causes of school violence is a difficult task. As one cannot categorize the numerous school violence attacks that have occurred due to its unique circumstances. The famous phrase; “It takes a village to raise a child” can be thwarted when the village fails to respond to the needs of families. Hence this form of neglect can turn into school…show more content…
Lack of parental participation, abuse and poverty set up systems for failure. When a child is shown negative behavior, such as alcoholism, gun violence or physical abuse, a child might find it difficult to break out of the mold. Sometimes, the failures of role models translate into school violence. Also children who are brought up in luxury homes are often given too much freedom to do as they please, hence this leads to a child having a careless attitude and tends to intimidate others at school. In addition to their irresponsible behavior, children tend to indulge in alcoholism, narcotics and drugs. This makes a child succumb to violence and peer pressure to join gangs at
