Upon opening a book, the sixteenth and seventeen-century reader’s initial interface was with an architectural title page. I will argue in this paper that the architectural title page structured a complex spatial arrangement that connected the exterior of the book to its interior meaning through the theoretical concept of movement into and through its architectural space. In examining a specific set of title pages related to the author Samuel Daniel, I will explore the ways in which the architectural system of the arch drew from an architectural culture that focused on theories of vision and philosophies on boundaries and thresholds.
