As said by Lao Tzu, “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply give you courage”. In the poem “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes, Bess and the Highwayman display true love with the bond they have formed in their time spent together ending with the selfless death of Bess. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet show infatuation, immaturity evidenced by their selfish deaths. Prove they are not in love, but just infatuated with one another. In contrast with Romeo and Juliet, the love between the highwayman and the landlords daughter is undoubtably true love.
Bess and The highwayman show a deep bond of trust and love that could can only be accomplished over time, something that Romeo and Juliet did not have. This is shown in “The Highwayman”. The first way it is shown is they way they meet in the inn,…show more content… The ostler of the inn is jealous of there relationship, meaning they must have had a relationship long enough where it can make others jealous. Finally, the highwayman tells Bess he is “after a prize to-night,/ But [he] shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light.” (1,V, 2-3). This is showing the trust he has with Bess that she will not tell anyone about his robbery and proves the highwayman’s trust in Bess. Meanwhile in Romeo and Juliet the couple have no trust in one another, and have just met when they proclaim their love for one another. When Romeo first met Juliet, he could not stop talking about how beautiful she was and how much he loved her appearance. When they first spoke to one another they shared a brief conversation, then met up that night and vowed to marry one another
