Roberto Benigni is known throughout the movie industry as the type of actor that uses his goofy personality to win the hearts (and laughter) of his movie audience. He is the type of actor we all love to watch make a fool of himself just to help us crack a smile during our long hard working day. Although he is mainly a comedic actor, his role as Guido in the film, “Life Is Beautiful”, is the role that we get to see a whole other side of Benigni. His role as Guido was a role he was meant to play. The film shows you two completely opposite genres of film. Benigni shows us a serious side, which we don’t really see in him too often, and comedic sides that will make you smile though tears. Benigni, who also directed and co-wrote the movie, stars as Guido, a hotel waiter in Italy in the 1930s. The movie instantly starts of with a comedic vibe, giving the movie an interesting start that will help captivate the audience. In my own opinion, the story Benigni creates is done not to make fun of or laugh at one of the most terrible event to occur in human history, but to realize that yes, it was a terrible time for society in Europe and around the world, but we have to realize that not everything that happened during World War II was awful. People were living their everyday lives while this was going on. Benigni effectively creates a situation in which comedy is courage. He puts on a brave face to show his family. ''Life is Beautiful'' really does play by its own rules. It is debatable how much children, or anyone, should be shielded from real-life, but in Guido's gamble, that has a very high risk, it pays off. The emotional ending, which can still make me cry every time I watch the film, is all the more powerful because up till the end, we do not know what was really going to
