Robert Burton used hundreds of different books on various different topics to study and explore composition of love. He quoted from people such as Chaucer, Plutarch, various people in the Bible, and many others. Burton’s work used the cento method of writing, where a bookish work was compiled of quotes taken from other authors’ works at various times. Burton used this method, as well as interlacing his own original thoughts into this writing. He was extremely learned, as demonstrated by his knowledge extending between eras of learning, theology, history, language, and literature. His writing was urged with the hope to essentially cure melancholy, even though there are certain places that demonstrate pessimism about actually resolving the issue.
