Romanticism became prominent and flourished during the beginning of the nineteenth century. This was an age of great poetry in England, and of German romantic literature. His roots were firmly classical, and remained classical his entire life. However, his style was not completely classical. His pieces were certainly distinguishable from his fellow composers by their sense of urgency and its overall tone.
One of the main values of romanticism was the was the integrity of personal feeling. It was very important for a composer to have and value their own style and be unique. Though the main goal was to sound different from everyone else, other goals and interests influenced the composers of the time too. The melodies of the pieces were more emotional and demonstrative than ever before. Harmo ny was different from melody, and played a key role in individuality of the pieces. Tone color expanded greatly as a result of the ear as well.
A typical romantic orchestra consisted of instruments from the strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion groups. Violins, violas, cellos, bass, flutes, piccolos, oboes, English horns, clarinets, and bassoon were all used in the orchestra along with French horns, trumpets, trombones, tubas, timpani's, drums, cymbals, triangles, and bells.
