The book “Middlesex” by Jeffery Eugenides develops the theme of gender, identity, and rebirth. This theme is developed through the use of thoughts, words, and actions. The first point is her/his thoughts. “I was aware that there was something improper about the way I felt about Clementine Stark.” (Pg.157). This quote describes and shows the thoughts that are going through Calliopes brain and how she is mindful of the fact that something was different and “improper” about the feeling that she/he has towards Clementine.
