Robert Noyce was born in the small town of Grinnell, Iowa, on December 12, 1927, into a family with a tradition of men serving as teachers, ministers, or both. He was the third of four sons of the Rev. Ralph Brewster Noyce and Harriet May Norton. From a young age Noyce showed his competiveness and entrepreneurial mind, his earliest childhood memory involved beating his father in a game of ping pong and feeling absolutely shocked when his mother reacted to the news of his victory “Wasn't that nice of Daddy to let you win?".
