Class systems, social hierarchy, and racial prejudice were established in the colonial era. They can all be characterized as being based on superiority. Racial prejudice definitely was caused by the white colonists thinking they were superior to any people of color, whether it be the Native Americans or the Africans. Even the white indentured servants were treated better than the black slaves. White servants would eventually serve their time and be freed, which was not the case with slaves, and they were given food and land so they could start living their lives. Also, the terminology used, “indentured servants” instead of “slaves”, clearly illustrates that the white servants were superior to the black slaves even though they both had to work
