Throughout art history, there are many pieces of artistry that exemplify the saying, “true love always finds its path”. Through Herbert James Draper’s painting entitled Launcelot and Guinevere and Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem “VI. Lovers Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere” reference is made to two characters by the names of Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere. These two contemptible and stubborn figures are those of few Arthurian characters that embody this idea and risk a lot to be with each other out of love. Queen Guinevere and Sir Launcelot furthermore personify the quote “do not let your heart go over your head”. In this painting there are several different people carrying out different duties. The observer can tell that Guinevere has focused all her attention on Launcelot, not minding what the other ladies are helping her with. The way that Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere are looking at each other foreshadows a feature event. This event is Queen Guinevere having to choose between her heart and her duty. Her heart is set on Sir Launcelot but she is contemplating between that and her duties. This betrayal may cause a lot of controversy amongst everyone, but they decide to put their love first. While the poem gives off a beautiful and contented impression, the poem almost seems to give off the complete opposite vibe. In the opening of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem, “VI. Lovers Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere” he begins to set the moral of this piece. The moral is about the consequences of cheating, and how you should not let your heart go over your head.
