The Navigations of Henry the Navigator In 1349 Prince Henry was born. Prince Henry was the third son of King John I and his wife Phillipa of Lancaster. Prince Henry was a royal prince, soldier, and patron of explorers. He was inspired to sail to africa due to his attack set on the Moslem Port. Henry began to prepare for navigating by going to an astronomical observatory in Sagres, Portugal. Henry set many expeditions down West Africa’s coast, but did not attend them. He sent expeditions to Madeira Islands, Cape Bojador, Cape Blanc, Cape Vert, and they went as far as the Gambia River and Cape Palmas. He had begun the Great Age of Discovery.
