Sharon Olds’ poem, On the Subway, illustrates a man and a woman of different races on the same train. On this ride, the lady’s perspective of the man in front of her shows how different the man is from herself. The contrasts of both portraits are that the lady has more valuable items while the boy wears invaluable clothing. The result of her experience on the subway is that her life is better than his life.
