There I stood in my boots, with everything I needed for this season of life on my back- anxious and excited. I had just finished two years of work in the country of Kuwait, a small Arab kingdom located on the Persian Gulf between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It was a different kind of work experience than traditional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in the continental United States. It was interesting, exciting, rewarding, and a drain psychologically. During that time I started to plan a through-hike of the Appalachian Trail (the “AT”) that would take me 2,185 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Baxter Park, Maine.
