Personal Narrative: My Experience In Middle School

Growing up with little English speaking parents was tough. However it was a struggle that opened up my eyes. A struggle that years later made me realise how grateful I should be for all the teachers, volunteers, classmates and mentors that took time out of their day to help me academically. I personally struggled understanding Math and English concepts in middle school. Many days I would come home and ask my mother for help with my homework and she would not help me because she did not know how to do it herself. At the time I just though she just did not want to help me, but as I grew up I realised that it was honestly because she hardly spoke English and did not stay in school long enough to learn the curriculum being taught to me. Freshmen year in high school is when I began volunteering at a homework help program in my community. Volunteering truly opened my eyes and made me appreciate all the little things my community had done for me. The after- school program, gave me the opportunity to work with very smart and open minded students. I read to and with the kids, taught them how to use a dictionary to promote independence, teached them advanced and more appropriate words. The students looked at me as a leader, which motivated me to be the best role model to them. I encourage them to use their manners, like saying please and thank you. Created learning activities that were fun and educational. For example, drawing pictures and afterward, having a free write about their picture. This encouraged the kids to have fun drawing while still strengthening their writing skills. In addition, i would formulate scavenger hunts that involve using different resources, such as dictionaries, maps or books to find answers. This gave the kids an opportunity to learn on their own, but have fun as well. When the students behaved good, finished their homework, used their manners, or did a good deed they would get a reward for their good behavior. This motivated the kids to try to their best ability.
