Growing up in rural Jamaica and attending Mount Holyoke College in rural Massachusetts could not prepare me for working in a complex urban environment like New York City. When I began working at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, I had to quickly adjust to navigating a potentially confusing public transportation system and fast pace environment. I also experienced culture shock, while adapting to a new society and regularly interacting with people from different regions of the world. I was excited to meet people from various social and cultural backgrounds, and as I made an effort to understand their culture, it became easier to connect with them.
