Personal Narrative: Costa Rican Family

My goal was to find a trip that involved service with kids in other countries. I preferred this because, I adore children and I love traveling. I had a longing to work with kids in other countries because I wanted to build a friendship with them and be in a different culture and environment to learn ways I can personally aid them. The first service project we did was at a Costa Rican family’s house. Their house was destroyed by ___________. We spent three days sanding each wall in the house and posts on the porch and painting them with a beautiful green color. We also made cement with shovels, mixing rocks, granite and water; which would then make the porch flooring. There was a tube of water that traveled down the hill, lining the steps used to climb up and down. This tube was full of litter and water which lead to a river at the bottom of the hill. The locals wanted to make the bottom of the hill less focused on the unpleasant litter and desired an area for children to play. Therefore, they needed to make cement. When we came across them we noticed the huge pile of rocks and the long way down to the bottom of the hill. We decided to help them out and started loading bags and bags of rocks and carrying them down. This work in particular was the hardest. It took about 5 minutes to get down to the end and a coming up was a struggle with the strong sun beating down on us and the very steep hill. But we pushed through it again and again and again. After multiple trips up and down the hill, our hard work was done and the locals were so appreciative of our help. I’m glad I got to contribute to an area for the kids to have fun and play. Another day in La Carpio we volunteered at a children's center. The center was located outside in the town. When children would walk by and saw the various books and toys they would come and play with
