After our marriage, Nordi got a job, but I couldn't land one. At five in the morning I was out standing in line before some outfit that advertised for help, but always they'd turn me down. No experience. And my looks: for several years I had been troubled with acne, and now it burst out. I certainly didn't look wholesome, and that spoiled me for a salesman's job. I'd gladly have dug ditches for half pay if only I could have gotten started. Also, I could not seem to come out with a lie. I've always been poor at it, and wonder how Pop fell for that pregnancy story. Potential employers would ask me what I'd done in the last two years, and I'd fake around, but finally tell them about art school. They could barely wipe the smiles off their faces
