Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium, the tissue that surrounds the myocardium.8,11 This can result from a primary or secondary condition such as influenza, HIV, tuberculosis, cancer, kidney failure, and many others.8 Myocardial infarction, also called a heart attack, is when there is ischemia of the myocardium.8 This can result from an increase in myocardium demand with adequate blood supply or a decrease in coronary perfusion.8 However, pericarditis can be mistaken for a myocardial infarction and vice versa because of a similar symptom of chest pain and ST segment elevation that occurs on an ECG.11 A person with pericarditis will experience chest pain that is usually localized to the retrosternal area and to the left of
