Sex, drugs and money – these are the things that dominated the mind of the notorious Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Escobar is most famous for his extramarital affairs, the heinous crimes he committed, and his seemingly infinite amount of money. For nearly two decades, beginning in the early 1970s, Escobar dominated the cocaine drug trade in Colombia with the help of his partners and workers who were known as the “Medellin Cartel,” named after Escobar’s hometown. On December 2, 1993, nearly 16 months after Escobar escaped from prison, the Colombian law enforcement caught up to him and a shootout on a rooftop in Medellin led to his assassination. Escobar was the mastermind behind Colombia’s most powerful drug cartel, the Medellin Cartel. He formed the cartel with other powerful men that would help him achieve his goal of becoming the most powerful man in the drug trade. Some of these men include the Ochoa brothers, two wealthy brothers who came from a well-respected Colombian family, Rodriguez Gacha, known for his work in the emerald trade, and Carlos Lehder, a Nazi-sympathizer who was mainly in charge of the cocaine shipments from Colombia to the United States (The Colombian Cartels). With the special expertise that came from these men, Escobar was able to create the most powerful drug cartel at that time. In fact, Escobar controlled over 80% of the cocaine shipments arriving in the United States and smuggled a daily total of more than 15 tons of cocaine bringing in nearly $420 million dollars each week.
